About Us

The first Tidy Towns Committee was formed in the early 1960s in an effort to ensure Castlecomer was not only a great place to live but to work in and visit also. The first Members included Canon William O’Keefe P.P., Kitty Dunne, Kit Holohan, George Murphy, Jo Kelly, Pat Owens, Tom Gleeson, Andy Brennan (Halad), Treasa Quinn, Martin O’Grady, Diarmuid O’Donovan, and Packie Kelly. The volunteers were very active and were rewarded in 1967 when the town scooped the one and only recognition the Bord Na Mona Award for lawns.

Over the years there have been numerous wonderful community people donning the mantle of responsibility notably Noreen Curry, Upper Ballyhemmon, David O’Rourke, Donaguile Heights, and Dick Brennan, Donaguile. Today Dick Brennan remains a stalworth loyal member and continues to serve as Treasurer.

Now we are blessed with a great band of new volunteers under the stewardship of Cathriona Normoyle, Maryville (Chairperson). Secretary Maurice Shortall, Dick Brennan Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer Margaret Dillon, Helen McMahon health and safety officer. Committee members; Michael Brennan, Lilian Boland, Aidan Shortall, Lily O’Neill, John Feehan, Josephine Holland, Martin Phelan. Jeremiah Kortegan, Sean McMahon. Castlecomer has entered the Tidy Town’s Competition since 2001.

We have managed to improve our marks year on year. Our current 3 year plan was developed in conjunction with local county council officers, local engineers, local schools, clubs, and businesses.  We have worked hard on previous recommendations made by the tidy town judges.
